Castle Lochstädt in the Samland

got totally destroyed...

The Knights Castle Lochstädt is only half a mile away from the Amber coast. During Nazi regime, the ruin had been restored as a memorial place of the German Knights. Archives, libraries and art treasures were stored in the cellars in September/October of 1944 and even later. The transports were said to be made by the firemen of Königsberg. Collections of the Prussia-Museum of Königsberg came to Castle Lochstädt, containing also Amber artwork. Later on, these collections had been brouhgt to Schleswig-Holstein by ship. Even Professor Strauß did not exclude Castle Lochstädt as a possible hiding place for the Amber Room. He had been in the castle near the end of the fighting and wrote down hints about the Amber Romm and other looted artwork with the help of a Russian prisoner. He kept his notes together with some books in the cellar.

However, the Castle was defended by the Wehrmacht until the last moment to allow Erich Koch to flee on a ship from Pillau which had been reserved for him. As a result, the Castle was totally destroyed...
